Good interior design should support how people live and feel. This project draws on biophilic and neuroaesthetic principles to create a more inviting, restorative home. Thoughtful decisions involving colour, finishes, furnishings, artwork, and spatial planning helped transform both the atmosphere and the everyday experience of the space.
NEURODESIGN + BIOPHILIA
Our approach is informed by neurodesign—the application of research into how people perceive, experience, and respond to the built environment—and by biophilic design, which strengthens our connection to nature. In this project, colour, proportion, natural light, artwork, plants, and materials such as wood, stone, and metal were considered for the way they influence comfort, atmosphere, and emotional response. Together, these elements create a home that feels more grounded, restorative, and connected to its surroundings.

LIVING ROOM PICKERING BUNGALOW PROJECT
Organic linen draperies and furnishings selected with careful attention to material composition and indoor air quality were introduced throughout the space. New drywall and zero-VOC paint created a fresh foundation, while custom wall cabinetry provided concealed storage and a place to display cherished objects, reducing visual clutter. A gas fireplace with a stainless-steel tile surround added warmth, comfort, and a strong focal point.
KITCHEN – PICKERING BUNGALOW PROJECT
To create a greater sense of openness in this compact bungalow, the wall between the living room and kitchen was removed. The kitchen was redesigned with new cabinetry, stone countertops, energy-efficient appliances, and a refrigerator with filtered water. A custom black walnut live-edge table and built-in banquette created a generous gathering place for dining and entertaining.
The most transformative change was raising the ceiling from eight to fourteen feet and introducing three large skylights. The centre skylight is operable and includes a screen and rain sensor, allowing for both natural ventilation and daylight. Together, the increased ceiling height and skylights brought light deep into the home, supported a more natural daily rhythm, and reduced reliance on artificial lighting during the day.
The result is a small home that now feels open, bright, and remarkably spacious.
SUNROOM – PICKERING BUNGALOW PROJECT
The sunroom was fully gutted and renovated following damage from a roof leak. New flooring, triple-pane European tilt-and-turn windows, and a dimmable LED pendant were introduced to improve comfort, efficiency, and light quality. Custom furnishings and low-emission finishes were selected with careful attention to material composition, while automated Lutron blinds provide privacy and precise light control.
The detached shed was also removed and replaced with a new contemporary structure designed by the studio. Its form and colour palette were developed to echo the interior, creating a stronger visual connection between the home and the landscape.
